2017 NSW Under 18 v QLD

2017 NSW v Queensland
U18 Interstate Test Series

Played at Taren Point BC
2-4 July 2017

HONOURS SPLIT IN INTERSTATE SERIES

The young stars of New South Wales and Queensland bowls convened at Taren Point Bowling Club 3-4 July 2017 to battle for bragging rights in their annual Under 18 Interstate Series. NSW went into the Series with 6 of the 10 players who were part of the NSW domination of the 2016 Australian Junior Championships which included a clean sweep of side trophies (Boys, Girls and Overall). The 6 Australian Champions (Toby Peters, Jayden Gebbie, Jono Davis, Louise Cronan, Kate Matthews and Brianna Smith) were joined by Zac Corr-Johnson (St Johns Park), Lachlan Freeman (Raymond Terrace), Hayley McDonnell (Halekulani) and Jessica Smith (St Johns Park), all playing their first Series in the much-cherished NSW Blues uniform. With the Series played in NSW, Michael Phillips (Merrylands), Brittany Camp (Armidale Ex-Services) and Haylee Ross (Glen Innes) joined the side as reserves.

Played over two days the Series featured 4 sessions on Monday, the First and Second Tests. As the players hit the greens in the morning the temperature was down near the singles digits but the players started heating things up on the green as they hit top gear not long after the start. Heaters were rolled out for crowd comfort but the display of bowls produced by the boys and girls from either side of the border was enough to keep the eyes fixated to the green and mind away from the single digit comfort provided by the overcast windy day.

NSW Boys started where they left off at Nationals losing just 1 match out of 8 on the opening day and by the smallest of margins (1 shot), this dominance also secured the Test Series before the Final Test on the Tuesday. Although the NSW Girls were the reigning Australian Champions, the QLD Girls won the Series Shield for this event last year and added to the determination of fighting back from Australian Championship defeat, they were not going to let go of the Interstate Shield without a fight. A fight is just what they delivered, from the opening few ends on the Monday morning the QLD girls produced a very impressive team performance. The NSW Girls fought hard and continued to deliver bowls of a high standard but to the credit of the QLD side they repelled all NSW had to offer claiming 6 of the 8 matches throughout the day to also claim an unassailable lead in the Series, leading 2 Test to nil heading into the Tuesday and Third (Final) Test.

With the Third Test being a dead rubber for both Boys and Girls, the NSW and QLD selectors made some side changes. QLD opted for a few changes amongst their original playing squad while NSW decided to inject the reserves into the playing mix and give them some experience on the Interstate scene. Brittany Camp move in to the Girls Triples, Haylee Ross into the Girls Fours as Michael Phillips played in both the Boys Pairs and Triples. All players recording a win in their debuts for NSW.

NSW had the best of the Third Test overall with the Girls winning 3-1 and the Boys all square with QLD. Overall NSW Boys clinched their Series 2 ½ Test to ½ Test as the QLD Girls retained their shield with a 2 Tests to 1 victory.
