2017 NSW State Junior Championships – Day 5 Wrap
NSW State Junior Pairs Sectional

CORR-JOHNSON AIMING FOR HISTORY

Zac Corr-Johnson (St Johns Park) will be bowling for the chance to become the first player to win all three of the NSW State Junior Championships in the one year.

Zac Corr-Johnson (St Johns Park) will be bowling for the chance to become the first player to win all three of the NSW State Junior Championships in the one year.

Aron Sherriff played in the Final of all three disciplines, achieving that feat in 2002, while Cameron Curtis won all of the Championships on offer in both 1987 and 1988, winning both the singles and pairs in those years. The State Junior Fours Championship was first played in 1995.

Corr-Johnson will also be looking be shooting for back-to-back NSW State Junior Pairs titles, winning last year’s event with Luke Grainger. The only other players to win back-to-back were Hieu Nguyen & Ben Morthorpe (St Johns Park / Cabramatta) in 2006 and 2007 and Simon McKenzie & Cameron Curtis (Mullumbimby) in 1987 and 1988.

Zac Corr-Johnson in action

Corr-Johnson teamed with Josh Lord (St Johns Park), representing Sydney South West,  to take out Section 1. The opening round of sectional play saw them take on Corr-Johnson’s opponent in this year’s State Junior Singles final, Louise Cronan who was teamed with Taren Point club mate Amber Thornhill. The St Johns Park duo set up a dominant position in the section with a commanding 22-5 victory. With three teams in the section the St Johns Park pair had the Round 2 bye, while the Taren Point pairing had a strong win over Declan Wagschall and Ethan Scott-Branagan (Sydney Northern).  Lord and Corr-Johnson locked in their place in the Semi Finals with a solid win over the Sydney Northern pair in the third round.

Section 2 also saw a three-way battle, with Central Coast brother and sister combination Hayley and Josh McDonnell (Halekulani) opening the play with a narrow 11-10 win over North West NSW sisters Brittany and Haylee Ross (Glen Innes). Mid-Western NSW ensured Round 3 would decide the section with a strong win of the sisters Ross in Round 2 and then Tim Walsh (Nyngan) and Hayden Barrow (Dubbo City) claimed the section with a win over the McDonnell siblings. Walsh’s father (Michael) and Uncle Kevin Walsh were the inaugural NSW State Junior Pair Champions in 1985.

Illawarra was represented by the Host Club (Warilla) pairing of Toby Peters and Jayden Gebbie. The locals had all but secured the section after two rounds with dominant wins over Greater Western Sydney duo John Dunn and Thomas Holburn (Glenbrook) and then Hunter pairing Ian Parsons (East Maitland) and Tailor Appleby (Kurri Kurri). They then confirmed their place in the Semi-Finals with a solid win over Sydney North West pair  Michael Phillips (Merrylands) and Andrew Watkins (The Hills).

The fourth section came down to a third round showdown between two unbeaten teams after Newcastle’s Lachlan Freeman and Kate Matthews (Raymond Terrace) and Mid-Lower North Coast’s Cody Griffin (Kempsey Heights) and Alex Pyke (Park Beach) both won their opening encounters over teams from South West NSW (Kaitlin Russell, Junee and Heath Walker, Wagga RSL) and Manning (Malachy McTaggart, Pacific Palms and Lewis Williams Tuncurry Beach).  The Novocastrian pair claimed passage to the knockout phase with a 15-11 victory.
