2017 NSW State Junior Championships - Day 6 Wrap

2017 NSW State Junior Championships – Day 6 Wrap
State Junior Pairs Finals

CORR-JOHNSON TRIPLE CROWN WINNER
First player to win all three titles.

Josh Lord and Zac Corr-Johnson have art the 2017 NSW State Junior Pairs Champions, taking the title in a last end thriller.

The final saw Zac Corr-Johnson became the first ever player to clean sweep the NSW State Junior Championships, taking the Singles, Pairs and Fours titles in the finals this week at Warilla.

Lord and Corr-Johnson won the opening two ends, but a count of four on the third end handed the lead to Matthews and Freeman. They pushed the lead out to 8-3 after 5 ends before a fightback over the next two ends saw the lead chopped to 8-7.

Both Matthews and Freeman then lifted their game, putting Corr-Johnson under constant pressure. The Novocastrians edged ahead, winning 4 of the next 5 ends to lead 13-9.

A further count of 2 on the 13th end added to the pressure stretching the lead to 15-9, a lead of 6 with 2 ends to play.

A count of 3 on the penultimate end closed the scores to 15-12 and saw the St Johns Park boys hunting for a count of at least 3 on the final end to keep their hopes alive.

A trail shot from Josh Lord had the St Johns Park pair holding three shots, a count to which they added to be holding a match lie with Freeman having one bowl left to play, but Freeman sailed wide past the head, leaving the game and title to Lord and Corr-Johnson.

Hopes of a home club victory were high after the opening salvos of the first semi-final, Warilla’s Tony Peters and Jayden Gebbie. The Illawarra pair started brilliantly with counts of 4 and 3 on the opening two ends and then backed up with two singles to hold an imposing 9-0 lead after 4 ends.  Newcastle’s Kate Matthews and Lachlan Freeman (Raymond Terrace) then opened their account with a double and then piled the pressure on with a count of 5 to cut the lead to just two shots.

Peters and Gebbie looked to have got back on track with a single on the next end, but from there on it was Matthews and Freeman who took all the chances, winning the next 5 ends to lead 15-10 with 3 of the 15 ends left to play.

The Raymond Terrace pair then staked their claim on the match with a count of 5 on the 13th end to extend the lead to 10 shots with two to play.

Peters and Gebbie needed a big score to stay in the match, but Matthews and Freeman scored a 2 to make the task impossible for the Warilla Boys and the players shook hands on a 22-10 result.

The second Semi-Final matched Sydney South West against Mid-Western NSW pairing of Tim Walsh (Nyngan) and Hayden Barrow (Dubbo City).

Walsh’s father Michael and Uncle Kevin Walsh were the inaugural winners of the NSW State Junior Pairs, claiming the Championship title in 1985.

The opening half of the match was a great tussle with the lead changing a number of times, but the St Johns Park duo grabbed the ascendancy , winning four consecutive ends to move to a 12-7 lead after 10 ends. They reinforced their position with another double on the 12th end to lead 14-8 with three ends to play.

Walsh and Barrow threatened a fightback with a single on the 13th end, but a further double on the penultimate end to Lord and Corr-Johnson saw them stretch to a 16-9 lead.

Chasing a count of 7 on the final end proved a monumental task and the St Johns Park pair simply loaded the head to claim three and run out 19-9 victors.
