Community Development Officers

Collaborative approach to assist NSW clubs
Bowls Australia, the Royal New South Wales Bowling Association and the New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association are pleased to announce the recruitment of six community development officers to improve service delivery to clubs in NSW. Fiona Wendt has been recruited to service the north east NSW region, Adam McIntyre will cover Riverina NSW, Josh Thornton will look after west and far western NSW, Mark Whiteman will assist Newcastle and the Central Coast, Peter Fahey will support ACT and south eastern NSW and Chris Green will service metropolitan Sydney clubs.
The community development officer program has enabled 15 staff to be employed nationwide (excluding Queensland) who are based within a geographical region to provide a level of support and assistance to affiliated clubs over and above previous development officer programs.
Fiona, Adam, Josh, Mark, Peter and Chris will be available to assist clubs in the following areas:
  • Increase participation and membership within the sport of bowls;
  • Providing support to clubs with business planning, member recruitment/retention, governance, funding, programs, information technology and volunteer strategies; Implementing whole-of-sport programs delivered at club level;
  • Increasing the quantity and quality of coaches and officials; and
  • Accurately recording local membership and participation data.
This new collaborative approach has been made possible through a combination of contributions from BA and the STAs as well as all funds raised through the National Merchandising Program. This program would not have been possible without additional participation funding granted through the Australian Sports Commission following the release the Federal Government’s new vision - ‘Pathways to Success’. The ASC will contribute $1.6 million over four years to this new program.
The community development officers have a variety of experience including, bowls experience, club development experience and delivery of community programs.
Fiona comes to BA from the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sport Program. She is full of personality, and passionate about sports role within the community.  She resides in the Coffs Harbour region where she has developed and managed various businesses in fitness, fashion and design.
“I see bowling clubs as a community meeting place to promote health and well-being,” Wendt said.
Having worked a bowls coordinator at one of the larger clubs in Australia, Moama bowls club, Adam is well placed to tackle his new role.  Adam will be responsible for the Riverina region and has previously represented both NSW and Victoria at state representative junior and senior level.
“I’m enthusiastic and have a real passion for the sport of bowls at all levels from club to international,” McIntyre said.
Josh has spent the last two years working for Bowls QLD as a development officer and has ambitions to become the Bowls Australia chief executive officer within 15 years.  Josh has competed in a state junior national championship for Victoria and has also represented his region in open age.
“I have always pursued a career in bowls administration and think this will provide an ideal opportunity for me to assist clubs and members,” Thornton said.
Mark has spent the past four years with Bowls NSW as a development officer.  Mark is an incredible athlete and dual Paralympian – having represented Australia in weightlifting, athletics (where he holds an Australian title) and sitting volleyball. Mark has also been playing bowls for about 8 years. As testament to his willingness to achieve, Mark ‘won’ a reality contest through SBS television where a group of persons competed to see who would have the opportunity to sail in the 2009 Sydney to Hobart.  Mark is originally from Newcastle and will be responsible for the Newcastle and Central Coast region.
“As a CDO I will be professional in my approach to developing the sport of bowls,” Whiteman said.
Peter has had extensive experience in bowls at all levels.  He has represented ‘NSW city’ in ‘city v country’ at junior level, and upon moving to ACT has represented ACT at state/territory senior level.  Many years ago he completed a traineeship with Bowls NSW and went on to work in one of the larger bowls clubs in Port Macquarie.  In later years Peter has spent time working in the landscaping and building supply industries and continued his bowls both as a player and club administrator.  He lives and breathes bowls and has a good understanding of the challenges bowls currently face both in his own club and larger clubs in NSW.
“I’m committed to promoting new ideas to help bowls prosper as a sport and keen to encourage school based junior programs,” Fahey said.
Chris is a bowler from NSW who has represented his state at junior level. He could easily be described as an “old head, young shoulders” type who is a formidable opponent on the green as a player, but also one of the best markers used for BA televised events. Chris has been with Bowls NSW for some time, and will transfer to a BA CDO in the near future.
“I’ve grown up witnessing many changes in the sport of bowls and now I want to be behind some of the changes,” Green said.
The newly appointed community development officers will commence their contact with clubs within their region following their comprehensive induction program in Melbourne to ensure that they are well equipped to assist and grow the sport of bowls into the future.
Bowls Australia, RNSWBA and NSWWBA welcome Fiona, Adam, Josh, Mark, Peter and Chris to the community development officer program.
For further information on the appointment of community development officers, please visit the Bowls Australia website at www.bowlsaustralia.com.au.
